Antoni Tapies

Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona in 1923 into a cultured, middle-class, Catalan nationalist family who, since the 19th century, had been part of a publishing and book-selling tradition that awoke in him an early love for books and reading.

He spent an increasing amount of time on drawing and painting and ended up abandoning his law studies to devote himself to them fully. By the forties he was already exhibiting his works, which were outstanding on the art scene of the time.

Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona in 1923, in a bourgeois, cultured and Catalan nationalist family, involved since the middle of the nineteenth century in an editorial tradition and bookstore, this awoke very soon in the Tapies a love for books and reading. His reading predisposition is accentuated by a long convalescence of a lung disease, during which he initiated his artistic scores. Gradually Tàpies devoted himself more intensely to drawing and painting, and ended up leaving his law degree in order to devote himself fully to his passion. During the 40s he starts exposing his works, which stand out within the artistic panorama.

Tapies is part of a widespread sensitivity that affects artists on both sides of the Atlantic, following World War II and the launch of the atomic bomb, he soon expresses an interest in matter, land, dust, atoms and particles, which formally materializes in the use of materials alien to academic expression and in the experimentation of new techniques. Materialistic paintings form a substantial part of Tàpies' work and constitute a project that continues to be developed today.

His exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and at the Kunsthaus in Zurich, at the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, at the Jeu de Paume and at the Center Pompidou in Paris, at the Reina Sofía National Art Center in Madrid, at the Institut Valencià 'Art Modern of Valencia and in the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, mong many others.
